Portal Frames

Portal frame & covered outdoor learning areas (COLAs) construction is a method of building and designing simple structures, often using steel or reinforced concrete. Connections between the columns and rafters in a portal frame construction are designed to be moment resistant, that is, to carry bending forces.

This type of construction has very strong and rigid joints, which means that bending movements get transferred to the columns. Portal frames are a very efficient construction technique for wide span buildings because the moment resistance means that rafter size can be reduced or that the span between rafters can be increased.
