Stump systems

SteelMAX stump systems consist of:

  • Stump base
  • Stump top
  • Other stump fittings, including post-sleeves, connector brackets and fascia trims.

Steel-Max stump systems come in two sizes – 75mm and 90mm. Deciding which stump system you need depends on  the size and type of the bearers and joists you will be using.

The following pointers can help you make your decision, but it is also crucial to also seek the advice of and follow the recommendations of a qualified engineer. An engineer will be able to recommend products suited to local site conditions, such as soil reactivity and slope.

The following table provides a guide as to which stump system will suit your application.

Bearer type

Stump size Timber RHS tube Cold channel Lite Steel Beam PFC
75mm Yes Yes Best Optional Yes
90mm Yes Yes Optional Best Yes

Once you have decided on the type of system you need, you can then select stump bases and tops to suit your application. When doing so, consider the following tips:

  • Select a stump top with a vertical fin plate that is high enough to provide lateral support and allow good fixing to the bearers
  • Do not allow the fin plate to exceed the height of the bearer. This is especially important for timber bearers, which may shrink.
